I'm an emergency physician who believes that healthcare should work better for everyone: patients, staff, and communities alike. Since qualifying in 2008 as one of South Africa's first Emergency Medicine graduates, I've worked across two continents, from resource-constrained settings to a major trauma centre. This journey - from designing the South African Triage Scale and serving as Chief Editor of the African Journal of Emergency Medicine, to my current role supporting urgent and emergency care in Southwest England - has shaped my understanding that good healthcare transcends resources; it's about smart systems and human connections. Today, I wear multiple hats: Consultant at a medium-sized district hospital ED, and Specialist Advisor UEC for NHSE (Southwest) and CQC. Whether I'm tackling ED crowding, translating data into practical solutions, or writing for St Emlyn's blog, my north star remains constant: making things work better for those who need it most. Away from the hospital, my wife and I homeschool our two children, navigating learning differences with the same problem-solving approach I bring to emergency medicine. Our household includes a cat, a dog, and two rogue chickens who've declared war on our vegetable patch.
