Asking for help and managing uncertainty
Know who to call, how to explain your concern and when to stop.
Clinical learning outcomes: Awaiting named clinical review.
What you should learn
- Recognise the limits of your role and seek timely review.
- Communicate concern clearly and follow up if help has not arrived.
Recognise and explain
- You do not need a diagnosis before asking for help. Immediate safety takes priority over completing a learning task.
On your placement
Agree the activity and supervision with the clinical team. For patient-facing learning, seek permission and respect the patient’s comfort and care needs.
- Find out how to summon urgent help and who supervises you on the shift.
- Rehearse a short escalation call using a case with your supervisor.
- Ask a clinician to explain a decision they found uncertain.
- At the end of the shift, discuss one situation in which you were unsure what to do.

Framework checked: 8 October 2026. This is a source check, not clinical sign-off.
Clinical learning outcomes: awaiting named clinical review.
The four learning routes are St Emlyn’s groupings. The six interconnected MLA domains remain part of the official content map.
